The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said the storm is the biggest since October 2003 and likely to persist over the weekend, posing risks to navigation systems, power grids, and satellite navigation, among other services. The thousands of Starlink satellites in low-Earth orbit use inter-satellite laser links to pass data between one another in space at the speed of light, allowing the network to offer internet coverage around the world.

CNN —Russian forces have made two cross border assaults inside northern Ukraine, according to information from Ukrainian sources and officials – in what President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling a ‘new wave of counteroffensive actions” by Russia. Video circulating on social media shows the moment the top of the mast broke, rotated through 180 degrees, and fell to earth. “Their tactics have changed – unfortunately, not for the better for us,” Svitlana Grynchuk, Ukraine’s deputy energy minister, told CNN. In the first two years of war, Russian attacks were more scattered, firing salvos of missiles to target large swathes of Ukraine’s energy system. More than 200,000 people were left without power after Russian attacks Thursday. But Ukraine is now confronting a wholly different task: repairing not just substations, but entire power plants. Rather than rebuilding large – and, without air defenses, vulnerable – power plants, it may shift how it produces its energy.

Ukraine's military chief on Saturday warned that the battlefield situation in the industrial east has "significantly worsened in recent days," as warming weather allowed Russian forces to launch a fresh push along several stretches of the more 1,000 km-long (620-mile) front line. It has increasingly used satellite-guided gliding bombs — which allow planes to drop them from a safe distance — to pummel Ukrainian forces beset by a shortage of troops and ammunition. Starting last month, Moscow renewed its assault on Ukrainian energy facilities. At least 10 of the strikes damaged energy infrastructure in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. In the winter of 2022-2023, Russia took aim at Ukraine's power grid in an effort to deny civilians light and heating and chip away at the country's appetite for war.

Russian drone and missile strikes targeting infrastructure in several regions across Ukraine early Thursday show the need for more air defense systems, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. "Russian terrorists once again targeted critical infrastructure objects. Objects in other regions were also targeted: Kyiv, Zaporizhzhya, Odesa, and Lviv," Zelenskyy stated. "Each of our neighbors in Europe, each of our other partners sees how critical Ukraine's need for air defense is," he said, adding, "Air defense and other defense support are needed, not turning a blind eye and long discussions." Ukraine is growing frustrated at procrastination over additional military aid, with $60 billion of U.S. assistance blocked by Republican lawmakers.

CNN —Ukraine’s parliament has scrapped plans to give soldiers who have spent prolonged periods fighting on the frontlines the chance to return home on rotation, after passing a draft law seeking to boost the number of soldiers in its military. The draft law passed Thursday with 283 votes in favor, including a raft of measures aimed at providing a desperately needed boost for Ukraine’s military. Dozens of wives and relatives of servicemen gathered outside Ukraine’s parliament Thursday to protest the passing of the draft law, demanding that demobilization deadlines be included.
